About Mrs. Stewart
HI! My name is Laurie Stewart and this is my 24th
year teaching art at Atholton Elementary.
A little about me….I attended high school here in Howard County, got my
BA from Frostburg State and received a Master’s degree from Towson State. I was very fortunate to start teaching
at AES right out of college. I love being among the community, kids and staff
at AES and teaching what I love! Teaching gives me a chance to watch how
children take in information, blossom and be proud of the artwork that they can
create! When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my husband and two
daughters. I also enjoy reading, gardening, crafts, and biking with my family.
Look around you, art is everywhere!
Embrace it!

Lessons your child learns in the Art room
- The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Important problem solving skills such as comparing and contrasting are developed.
- Students learn that problems can have more than one solution and and that questions can have more than one answer. Art loves creative solutions!
- The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. Students learn to expand their understanding and awareness of the world around them.
- Students learn to adapt their solutions to a problem as other possibilities are discovered and explored.
- Art is its own language. Students learn that images can often express what cannot be said.
- It’s the details that count! Small differences can have large effects.
- Each medium has unique characteristics, which influence the outcome of the art.
